Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Teck Resources (NYSE:TECK) performed exceptionally well in 2016, rising from the low single digits to the mid-$20s. I don’t think the stock will repeat that strong performance in 2017. However, I do think the stock will outperform the S&P 500 with strong double-digit gains. Teck Resources’ recent 20% pullback has the stock at an oversold level. The stock remains undervalued as compared to its peers and the broader market. The company has multiple catalysts that will drive the stock’s outperformance from this undervalued level.

Teck Resources is poised to benefit from an improving economy and from President-elect, Donald Trump’s plan to spend $1 trillion on U.S. infrastructure over a 10-year period. New construction starts are expected to increase 5% in 2017. That forecast was projected before the U.S. Presidential election. So, if Trump gets his infrastructure plan passed, we could see a higher percentage increase in construction spending. Teck Resources will benefit from its mining of copper, metallurgical coal and other minerals.

Top 5 Undervalued Stocks To Invest In Right Now: The Charles Schwab Corporation(SCHW)

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Matthew Smith]

Although we were not surprised by the move yesterday we did not take an overly aggressive stance in positioning the portfolio to benefit from the Fed not tapering. We were long, but we did not initiate any trades solely for the purpose to benefit from the announcement. We are more interested in the long-term wealth building of portfolios right now and as such believe that readers should look to our recent winners that had pullbacks yesterday as buying opportunities. Specifically, we like Ameritrade (AMTD), Charles Schwab (SCHW) and MetLife (MET) which all saw pullbacks ranging from 2.5% to a bit over 5.5% in yesterday’s session. We highlighted the discount brokers as a sector to watch right before the latest takeoff and our belief is that although rates remain unchanged the brokerage business will continue to perform strongly. The next big move up will be as rates rise, but even if one has to wait for this move it will be well worth it for one’s portfolio.

The $50/Bbl Question Is Answered In our June 2nd note entitled, Rethinking Risk/Reward on High Beta E&Ps, we highlighted that $50/Bbl is a critical level as it is around which many E&Ps have indicated they would begin either utilizing drilled-but-uncompleted (DUC) wells and/or increasing activity. Thus, with the NYMEX strip exceeding ~$50/Bbl in H216 and 2017, the question becomes, What will E&Ps do next? In our note we distinguished which oilier SMID Caps could organically accelerate at current NYMEX strip prices without further leveraging the balance sheet and which would still require higher oil prices. We ranked WPX third, behindOasis Petroleum (OAS) and Whiting Petroleum (WLL) in terms of its ability to accelerate through the drill-bit while keeping the balance sheet intact. For WPX we concluded that without increasing activity beyond our base case assumptions or higher oil prices, leverage would increase by 0.8x in 2017. However with accelerated activity and corresponding higher outspend (via more Williston DUCs and an addtl Permian rig), we forecast WPX could further grow production next year and keep leverage flattish at ~3.5x Net Debt/EBITDAX. We think todays announcements confirm our thesis, as WPX increased 2016 Williston activity and issued equity to facilitate this addtl spend plus potential activity acceleration in 2017/2018 without adding more debt.
