Top Canadian Stocks To Watch For 2021

Intrepid Potash (NYSE:IPI) has gone on an interesting run in the last week, growing from $1.49 on December 5, 2016 to close at $2.17 as of December 12, 2016.

Factors that have helped keep the market price down historically include uncertainty around its credit agreement (which was successfully renegotiated), cyclically low potash prices (which have been recovering), and likely, its recent income statements (which were hurt by high production costs which have since been cut).

However, as the company’s balance sheet strength continues to improve and its profitability prospects increase, future shares could reasonably trade closer to its $8.87 per share of accounting book value ($4.95) plus Deferred Tax Assets ($3.92).

Simply put, the accounting book value (aka stockholders’ equity) is the stated assets minus liabilities left over to shareholders. In its latest quarterly report in 3Q2016, IPI’s stockholders’ equity was $378.9mm, approximately $4.95 per share.

Furthermore, what many investors may be missing is that as of its latest 10-K report (Page 78), the company maintains $300.6mm in “Deferred Tax Assets” (DTAs), valued at $3.92 per share. Deferred Tax Assets can be used by the company to shield future income from taxes.
